Guide to Bar, Montenegro

Bar is Montenegro’s main port town on the southern Adriatic coast. Unlike many resorts along this coast, it is a real town that lives all year round, with a port, a railway station, a hospital, schools, markets and a long seaside promenade.

This guide brings together what international buyers usually want to know before choosing Bar: the beaches, how to get there, what to do in every season, how Bar compares with neighbouring towns, and how buying a new apartment works. It is written by the team behind Adriatic Horizon Residence, a new-build residence in the quiet Ilino quarter of Šušanj.

Why Bar and Šušanj?

Šušanj is the northern part of Bar, often called “Novi Bar”. Ilino is a calm residential neighbourhood within Šušanj, about 1.1 km from the town centre – roughly a 14-minute walk or 4 minutes by car. Supermarkets, a pharmacy and a school are within about 300–500 m.

Because Bar is not purely a holiday resort, it works well both for a holiday home and for living here permanently.

The beach and the sea

Šušanj beach is a long pebble beach with a promenade, cafés and beach bars. It is calmer and more local than the beaches in Bar centre, popular with families and known for its sunsets, because it faces west and south-west. Read more in our guide to Šušanj beach.

Getting there and things to do

Bar is easy to reach: Podgorica Airport is about 50 minutes away via the Sozina tunnel, Tivat Airport about 1 h 15 min along the coast, and there is a ferry to Bari in Italy and an overnight train from Belgrade. See how to get to Bar.

Around town you have the medieval old town of Stari Bar, one of Europe’s oldest olive trees, King Nikola’s palace and Lake Skadar National Park within half an hour. Our list of things to do in Bar covers all seasons.

Bar compared with other coastal towns

Many buyers hesitate between Bar, Sutomore, Ulcinj and Budva. Each has its strengths: Budva is the busiest resort, Ulcinj has the longest sandy beach, Sutomore is a small summer town. Bar offers a balance of beach life and year-round services. Read our honest comparison: Bar vs Sutomore vs Ulcinj vs Budva.
