How to Get to Bar, Montenegro

Bar is one of the best-connected towns on the Montenegrin coast. It has two international airports within reach, the country’s main ferry port and the coastal terminus of the Belgrade–Bar railway.

Below you will find the practical options for travelling to Bar and to Šušanj, where Adriatic Horizon Residence is located.

By plane

Most international visitors fly into one of two Montenegrin airports, or into Dubrovnik in Croatia.

Podgorica is usually the quickest option for Bar. Tivat gives you a scenic drive along the coast.

From Podgorica, the road to Bar goes through the Sozina tunnel and comes out on the coast just north of town, so Šušanj is one of the first parts of Bar you reach.

By train from Belgrade

Bar is the end station of the Bar–Belgrade railway. An overnight train with sleeper cars runs all year: it leaves in the evening and arrives the next morning after about 11 hours. In summer there is also an extra day train.

The route is known as one of the most scenic in the region, crossing the mountains and running along Lake Skadar before descending to the coast.

By ferry from Bari

Bar port has a ferry connection to Bari in Italy, operated by Jadrolinija on a seasonal schedule. The crossing takes roughly 8 hours, and some sailings are overnight. You can take your car on board, which makes this a practical route if you drive from Western Europe.

For many travellers from Italy and beyond, arriving by sea is a relaxed alternative to flying, especially if you want to bring your own car and belongings.

By car and the Sozina tunnel

The Sozina tunnel (about 4.2 km long, opened in 2005, toll road) links Bar with Podgorica and the inland road network. It is the fastest connection between the coast at Bar and the capital.

Along the coast, Bar is about 10 km from Sutomore, about 40 km from Budva and about 25–30 km from Ulcinj. Compare these towns on our page Bar vs Sutomore vs Ulcinj vs Budva.

If you drive from Western Europe, you can combine the ferry from Bari with a short drive from the port to Šušanj.

Getting around Bar without a car

You can live comfortably in Šušanj without a car. From the Ilino quarter you can walk to Šušanj beach (500 m) and to Bar centre (about 1.1 km, around 14 minutes). Supermarkets, a pharmacy and a school are within about 300–500 m.

Frequent local buses run to Stari Bar, and the railway station and port are in town. For day trips, see things to do in Bar, or check the project location on the map.
